SW:ToR LFR Exploit Bans...Wait What!?!

Posted in by Starym at Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 14:42

So, yes. Bans in The Old Republic. Obviously there's no LFR there but the title seems strangely appropriate. EA have decided to swing the banhammer at some goldfarmers and in their swing also took out some potentially innocent people. The main part of the story that's been happening in the last few days is that some players went to Illum (a max level area) at low levels (under 40) and looted the chests there for epics "systematically and repeatedly... in very high numbers resulting in the game economy becoming unbalanced". Since these "very high numbers" aren't exactly mentioned and there are plenty of people complaining about being banned just for playing the game there is a valid discussion to be had here.

Now, the bans weren't permanent but that doesn't change the fact that EA is basically banning people for playing their game. This isn't some "leave instance to exploit a clear bug so you can return and then loot an item you clearly were not supposed to", it's just you going to a planet, avoiding mobs 10+ levels higher than you to loot a chest you'll be able to sell or use when you ding 50. Now, perhaps these really were goldfarmers and the action is legitimate, but this has to be the strangest system for banning in quite a while. Here's the full post from the ToR forums by Senior Online Community Manager Stephen Reid:

Our Terms of Service team recently took action against some accounts playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, and we wanted to give you some insight into what happened and why.

First, action was taken against a number of accounts for what's commonly known as 'gold farming' - or in our case, credit farming. These accounts were found to be exploiting the game in a variety of ways to maximize their credits in order to sell them to other players. Our Terms of Service team took action against these accounts and removed them permanently from the game.

Second, a smaller number of accounts were warned or temporarily suspended for exploiting loot containers on Ilum. To be completely clear, while players may choose to travel to Ilum earlier than the recommended level (40+) and may loot containers if they can get to them, in the cases of those customers that were warned or temporarily suspended, they were systematically and repeatedly looting containers in very high numbers resulting in the game economy becoming unbalanced.

None of these accounts were banned for their actions and no accounts have been banned for travelling to Ilum while still relatively low level. By comparison, the number of accounts that were warned or temporarily suspended was considerably lower than the number of accounts banned for 'credit farming'.

It's important to remember that our Terms of Service team is extremely careful and thorough in their investigation of any potential exploit or unusual activity in-game. Working closely with the development team and using extensive metrics based on player activity, they are able to determine what is normal player activity, what is unusual and what is exploiting. Our goal is always to ensure a fair game experience for all players while also protecting the rights of individuals, and if people are disrupting the play experience for others action will be taken.

While we will not discuss the details of any individual action, whenever we take action against an account we believe they have clearly broken our Terms of Service. Any action taken against an account can be appealed and in some cases actions have been rescinded.

While we understand people's concern about actions taken against accounts, please remember the Terms of Service team exists to help ensure a balanced and fair game experience for all. When you see reports of actions taken against someone's account, remember they are choosing to tell their version of the story - and there are two sides to every story.

In summary, our Terms of Service team took action against a number of accounts that were 'credit farming' to remove them permanently from the game. They also warned and temporarily suspended - but did not ban - a smaller number of accounts for activities on Ilum that were decided to be game exploits.

Some adjustments will be made to Ilum in the near future to discourage future exploits. However, the planet is still open to anyone who wishes to travel there.

The goal of the Star Wars: The Old Republic team is to maintain a service for our customers that is fun to play and equitable for everyone. Critical to this goal is making sure that gameplay is fair and reasonable and we are constantly on the lookout for anything that would prove to be a detriment to your gameplay experiences.

Thanks for reading, and we hope this gave you some insights.

the returns more, which also meets the system consistent style, but I just don't know what failures penalties are."First species programme is no risk of, so has no punishment. second species low risk General returns programme of failed punishment is award all cheap north face, only retained purple day account of experience value to 1999 level full State, silver months account of qianji hurdles you must own ways to. third species high risk high returns programme of punishment apart from award all canceled outside, also also to punishment you in task failed zhihou immediately entered for Republika a week of experience value halved State, First made the time within you by obtained of any by difficult value are only standard of half.

Yep, agree with you there and it's definitely good that they are doing it early and maybe they can keep a consistent policy with exploit bans etc.

I am sorry if my comment came over harsh! I love this site as one of very few authorative, interesting and insightful WOW/MMO news portals. I still think EA did a good job on this one, and just as they said in their official statement: there's two sides to every poor banned player's story... And they're disclosing that second side for a reason :-)

The article is based on available news at the time (namely Rock Paper Shotgun, Eurogamer etc.) and clearly states that Ea might be in the right but that the information presented in the forum post by the EA community person sounds weird. If what you're saying is correct then the problem is with EA explaining their actions. Also if it is as you say then it's even MORE like the LFR exploit.

I personally really hate nebulous posts like the one the community manager made, that don't really say anything about the issue. And at worst the article is lacking additional information (aka your explanation of the "exploit") and isn't misinformed at all, everything in the text is correct, if perhaps incomplete but that is due to me not being able to find the information you brought forward.

So, if it's correct, thank you for clarifying the issue for us, but maybe next time don't use such an aggressive stance :)

this is a misinformed article. people were using opposing faction alts to enforce resource respawn via clearing world objectives, which is a clearly unintended game mechanic and creating a massive resource inbalance. i applaud EA for dedication Blizz is lacking in regards to exploit consequences.
